When should you send a save the date?

Send a save the date as soon as the date is fixed and you want people to keep it free. The actual invitation, with all the details, follows later.

Guidelines per occasion

  • Wedding: often 6 to 12 months ahead, earlier for a wedding abroad. The invitation follows about 2 to 3 months before the date.
  • Big party or anniversary: 2 to 4 months ahead.
  • Business event: as soon as the date is set, especially if guests have to travel far.
  • Birthday or drinks: usually not needed. An invitation 3 to 4 weeks ahead is enough.

These are habits, not rules. The busier your guests’ calendars, the earlier you send it.

How it differs from the invitation

A save the date only says: this day, this place, keep it free. The invitation then adds the programme and directions, and asks for a reply.

Sending one for free

On freesavethedate.online you can make a free save the date with the date and the place. Guests add the date to their calendar with one tap and use RSVP to say whether they can make it. The page stays online until the date. More in Sending a free save the date. When you’re ready for the real invitation, create it on Eventinfo.pro (Create your first invitation).
